"Amazon of Europe" Day and Big Jump
Celebrations in Hungary
Hungary had an absolutely amazing nationwide "Amazon of Europe" Day and Big Jump and once more people in Hungary showed their affection and care for halthy, free-flowing rivers. In total, there were 16 Big Jumps registered, including one in the TBR MDD at Heresznye, where 113 people joined in and jumped into the Drava River.
Known as the “Amazon of Europe”, an area that extends through Austria, Croatia, Hungary, Serbia and Slovenia, the "Amazon of Europe" shall soon become Europe’s largest cross-border protected area, i.e. a five-country UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Three rivers form a 700-kilometer long green belt that connects nearly 1,000,000 hectare of one of the most important European river areas.
The main event took place in Dunabogdány, where WWF welcomed a record amount of participants, as there were more than 310 people running into the Danube together (see video at the end of the article).
Hungarian media showed their interest in this event and many reporters and journalists turned up to broadcast some footage of the day, which can be viewed on the following two links (in Hungarian language):
