Velika Polana has been officially designated as a “European stork village" by Euronatur foundation.  Each year 5-6 pairs (9 pairs nested in the year 1999) of stork grow up their chicks in Velika Polana. It was also the home of the Slovene writer Miško Kranjec. The house where he was born can be visited. The village is surrounded by farmland: sunflowers, pumpkin, maize and wheat fields dominate. The best way to explore the area is by cycling or walking the numerous trails. The NGO Strk Slovenija organizes the meanwhile famous “Pomurski Poletni Festival” in the second week of August in Velika Polana each year (www.strk.si). It is a big “stork festival” with excursions to the region but also many concerts.
