“Danube-Drava” National Park

The “Danube-Drava” National Park was established in 1996.  It comprises the entire length of the Drava within Hungarian territory and the extensive floodplain system of “Gemenc-Béda Karapancsa” (10,798 ha) along the Danube. The large floodplain forests and wetlands are a major feeding and breeding ground for some 110 bird species including cormorant colonies and a high density of kingfishers. The area is home to the largest population of black stork in Hungary, and it is one of the most densely populated areas by white tailed eagles in Hungary. In the undisturbed floodplain forests various species of herons, great white egrets, little egrets and spoonbills find their places to rest. In its riparian forests snakehead fritillary and honeysuckle occur. A special value is represented by the little egret and night heron nesting colonies of the Riha lake on the Mohács island. Greylag goose regularly breeds there and even the Red-crested Pochard is represented by a few breeding pairs.
